- Alcohol: potentially fatal; dogs are much more sensitive to alcohol than humans.
- Avocado: can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
- Bones: especially cooked bones can splinter and cause serious injury.
- Caffeine: potentially fatal in high quantities.
- Chocolate: potentially fatal and can affect the heart, nervous system and kidneys.
- Corn cobs: can block the digestive tract.
- Dairy: can cause digestive upset.
- Grapes and raisins: can cause kidney failure.
- Human medicines: painkillers such as paracetamol can kill a dog.
- Macadamia nuts: can cause weakness, depression, shakes and vomiting.
- Onions, garlic, chives and spring onions: can cause stomach and bowel irritation.
- Raw potato or potato plants: poisonous.
- Xylitol: can cause dangerously low blood sugar and serious liver disease.
- Yeast dough: can expand in the stomach and cause pain or blockages.
Foods that are safe for dogs
Carrot sticks and cucumber pieces can make useful low-calorie rewards. Frozen carrot sticks can also be helpful teething aids.
